The Cat's Eye Pressure Equalization System attaches to a hub or lug nut and allows air transfer from one tire to the other, keeping them in balance.
The bright yellow "eye" of the Cat's Eye opens up partly if dual tire pressure falls 10% below the recommended pressure setting.
If air loss continues either rapidly or slowly, the "eye" will open up completely by 15% loss, and the internal check valve closes preventing further air loss from either tire.

Tire air pressure has a significant impact on gas mileage.

According to the US Department of Energy and the EPA, gas mileage decreases by about 0.4% for each ONE psi drop in tire pressure. So if your tires are 10 psi low, your gas mileage will decrease by 4%. If you are getting 25 miles per gallon (mpg), that 4% translates into a 1 mpg loss.

For every 1 psi of air lost, a tire loses 60 to 70 pounds of load carrying capacity. Slightly Low pressure also causes increased tire wear, at the outer edges of the tread. More severe tire pressure loss causes increased flexing and heating of the tire side walls, which can lead to catastrophic tire failure (Blow Out).

Tire pressure decreases as air leaks out slowly over time, and also varies with temperature. For every 10 degrees of tire temperature change, there is typically a change of one psi of pressure.

Installation / Operation Tips:

The torque limit on the Cat’s Eye bracket mounting bolt is 15 FT-LBS.

Damage or leaks can occur if mounting bolt is over tightened.

 

Cat's Eye System Recommends installation under "High-Torque" lug Nuts or Hub Bolts;

Not Recommended for installation under "Low-Torque" Simulator Jam Nuts.

If you have wheel simulator covers or plastic wheel liners or plastic center caps, this system may not work unless you remove or modify them to gain access to high torque nuts.

 

Install hoses with minimum bending and kinking.

 

Seals must be replaced after the second removal of the cat's eye hoses from valve stems.

Valve Stems must be in good Condition to avoid leaks,

Check for burrs that could damage the seal.

Bubble Test with Soapy water to insure no leaks and correct installation

The most common installation problem is over-tightening the hoses.

Only install hoses hand-tight plus one-half turn.

Over-tightening will damage the seals. Seals are available in the parts list below.

 

Do Not use Acid Wheel Wash, this will void the Cat's Eye Warranty.

 

When installing new or used Tires, the inside of the tire must be free of all materials, including wheel balancing compounds.

 

Cat's Eye is NOT Recommended for Steer Axles.

Tire Manufacturers Agree: a primary cause of early tire breakdown and poor tread life is under-inflation. Low tire pressure not only causes excessive heat build-up in the tire, creating dangerous driving conditions, but also shortens tire life. Unwanted heat will rapidly increase tread-wear and can tear down retreads and destroy tire casings. As much as 90% of all tire breakdowns is the direct result of tire under-inflation.


According to the tire industry, a tire that is 20 percent underinflated is considered to have been “run flat.” A tire that has been “run flat” may result in damage due to excessive side wall flexing, which can result in separation of the plies and layers leading to unexpected and catastrophic tire failure - “blowout.” Tire pressures must be checked regularly to ensure that tires are properly inflated.

 

Studies by the Department of Transportation (DOT) found truck drivers do not check the tire pressure for many reasons: It takes too long to check, they get dirty doing it, and the inside dual wheel is difficult to reach. All tires can be neglected but it has been shown that the further away from the driver the tire is, the more likely it is to be under inflated.

Bridgestone/Firestone conducted a study of Emergency Medical Service vehicles to examine the inflation pressures of dual-tire assemblies. Of those tires that could be checked, two-thirds were found to be underinflated by at least 20 psi, or 25 percent capacity.

 

Statistics compiled by Heavy Duty Trucking Magazine show tires are the number one cause of breakdowns for trucks and tractors, at 53.5%, while 48% of trailer breakdowns are caused by tires. For every 1 psi of air lost, a tire loses 60 or 70 pounds of load carrying capacity.

 

Aside from not being filled properly to begin with, tires lose air naturally, through a process called permeation. Dual Wheel vehicles have additional issues. As a weighted dual vehicle travels down the road, friction and flexing cause heating of tires and wheels. Air flow cools the outer wheel more than the inner, at the same time braking heats the inner wheels more than the outer, resulting in the inner wheel running significantly hotter than the outer. This temperature difference makes the diameter of the inner wheel larger than the outer. A case study by Bridgestone found that a 5 psi pressure change results in 5/16 inch of tire diameter change. Tire circumference is 3.14 (pi) times the diameter. So for every 5 psi difference in tire pressure, there is nearly an inch difference in wheel circumference. That difference will cause one tire to drag on the other tire about 13 ft per mile, or about 100 miles of drag for every 40,000 road mile. The added resistance makes BOTH tires wear faster and decreases MPG at the same time.

 

 
Tire Valves use International Standard threads. The standard Schrader Tire valve has the following thread: 7.7 mm OD, 32 tpi, or 0.794 mm pitch, Minor diameter is 6.9mm, Thread designation is .305-32 or 7.7-32

 

We have had customers with leakage problems that turned out to be related to inadequate valve stems. Quality Valve Stems are much more critical with high-pressure truck tires than auto tires.
